We have really enjoyed Maths week throughout school this week! With lots of fantastic activities taking place. For Year 1 these have included learning all about reflective symmetry, an outdoor maths trail, playing chess, logic games, maths games and lots of problem solving both indoors and outdoors.
In literacy we planned our mermaid stories thinking about a problem and resolution. The children came up with some fantastic imaginative ideas. Then today, we wrote our very own mermaid stories independently…I can’t wait to read these over the holidays. From a glance they look fantastic!
In grammar we have been learning all about verbs and that these are ‘doing’ words. The children had a great understanding of this and could identify verbs in a sentence and came up with lots of their own.
This week we also learnt about and celebrated Chinese New year. We had an afternoon of creating Chinese fans, lanterns and beautiful paintings of Chinese blossom trees.
This week’s star is Kian for a fantastic effort in writing his mermaid story, well done! Super story jam packed with suitable, well-chosen adjectives!
Please check out our class blog via the website. This is regularly updated with pictures and you can get a real glimpse into what your children have been doing in year 1. The children would also love it if we received comments on our blog about their learning. Thank you to all those parents who have been accessing the blog and leaving comments!
Please continue to keep reading at home with your children whenever possible; accessing Reading Eggs and Mathletics and practicing spellings. Please also make sure children bring book bags every day; PE kits MUST be in school on a Monday; spelling test is on a Thursday, although no spellings have been sent home over the holidays as children will be tested the first week back on spellings they have already learnt.
Have a great holiday!
